Rooted in Leadership: From a Small Studio to a Bigger Dream
Rooted in Leadership: From a Small Studio to a Bigger Dream

How a $200,000 loan from BCL of Texas helped Alchemist Society grow its vision for beauty, business, and community.

Every successful business starts with someone willing to take a chance on a dream. For Piyush Ragha-Rook, founder of Alchemist Society in Austin, that dream began in a 100-square-foot studio with a vision to create something much bigger.

After his previous salon closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Piyush set out to build a salon focused on conscious beauty, education, sustainability, and community. He wanted more than a place for clients to get their hair done. He envisioned a space where stylists could grow their careers, clients could feel welcomed, and his team could make a difference in the community.

But bringing that vision to life came with challenges.

Turning Rejection into Opportunity

Like many small business owners, Piyush faced obstacles when seeking financing. For more than a year, he approached traditional banks, only to hear “not right now” or “come back later.”

Despite the setbacks, he continued believing in his dream.

“There were plenty of moments when I almost quit, but my family and my mom watching from above kept encouraging me to keep chasing my dream,” Piyush shared.

In 2023, BCL of Texas provided Alchemist Society with a $200,000 loan through our Growth Fund, giving Piyush the capital needed to move his vision forward.

“Getting this loan meant we could finally start building and open the shop! I was so emotional when I got approved!”

For Piyush, the loan meant more than financing. It meant having the opportunity to turn years of hard work and determination into something real.

Growing a Business, Creating Opportunities

With BCL’s support, Piyush was able to build out Alchemist Society, hire and train a team of stylists and estheticians, and create a welcoming space rooted in beauty, education, and community.

Today, what motivates him most isn’t just seeing his business grow. It’s watching his team develop their skills, seeing clients enjoy the atmosphere they’ve created, and knowing his business can make a difference.

“Alchemist Society is my love letter to Austin!” Piyush shared.

Giving back has always been part of his vision. Through partnerships with local organizations, Piyush and his team are finding ways to support their neighbors and strengthen the community they call home.

Leadership That Goes Beyond Business

For Piyush, leadership means creating opportunities for others to succeed.

His journey has taught him that building a business takes patience, determination, and a willingness to keep going, even when the road gets difficult.

His advice to other entrepreneurs?

“Keep going!!! You’ve got this!”

Piyush’s story is a reminder that when small business owners have access to the right resources, their impact can reach far beyond their storefront.

As a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), BCL of Texas is proud to support entrepreneurs like Piyush who are creating jobs, developing talent, and investing in their communities.

From a 100-square-foot studio to a growing Austin business, Piyush is showing what it means to be Rooted in Leadership.
