As a truly family-owned and operated business, Always Local does more than keep homes cool in the Texas heat. Every year, they run their “Cooling Homes, Warming Hearts” AC giveaway, donating a new system to a family in need. Their hiring practices are intentionally local too, ensuring technicians from places like Pflugerville, Buda, and Kyle serve their own neighborhoods. “It creates authentic, familiar connections,” David said.
But like many small business owners, David faced critical challenges—especially around staffing and sustaining operations year-round in a seasonal industry. While Always Local was profitable, the slow winter months made it hard to confidently hire and retain qualified technicians. That’s where our team at BCL came in. David discovered BCL through the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was immediately drawn to their mission and approachable team. “We didn’t want to make summer profits only to find ourselves in a bind in the winter”, he said.
BCL was able to provide them small business loan through the Diverse Ethnic Chamber Alliance (DECA) Loan Fund. This fund provides working capital for their business-related expenses and payroll during the upcoming slow months, providing the right assistance for their business needs. The DECA Loan Fund is focused on serving small business chamber members from communities with a history of underinvestment. BCL worked closely with David and his wife to identify the right financial tools for their needs. “Shane and Mark were fantastic,” David recalled. “They listened to what we were trying to do and offered both a loan and a line of credit. We ended up choosing the line of credit—it gave us the cushion we needed to hire the right people with confidence.”
Beyond the financial support, David credits BCL for reinforcing the belief that organizations do exist to support small businesses—especially those owned by underrepresented entrepreneurs. “Sometimes we feel we don’t belong, that people aren’t going to help us,” he said. “But you are part of the game. You just have to believe it. BCL was there to help us, and I know they’ll be there for others too.” Looking ahead, Always Local has big dreams: creating pathways for employee ownership and leadership within the company. David envisions technicians eventually becoming part-owners and carrying on the company’s commitment to the community. “BCL helped us plant the seeds for that future,” he said. “They’re more than a lender—they’re a true partner.”
